Finally, hand warmers for Allison.

alli_handwarmers_plucky.jpgI finished the second one up over the weekend. You may recognize the yarn, it is from Sarah, The Plucky Knitter. Pattern is from Debbie Bliss’ Junior Knits. The days have cooled off again, but it has been warm enough to go to the park and be outside.

And I can’t forget to include a photo of my first batch of granny squares. I am guessing the project with be a slow one that will continue on and off for the remainder of the winter. I used the tutorial at The Purlbee.

One last thing. {grin} I haven’t mentioned any favorite books in awhile. This is one we have been reading randomly over the last year. I picked it up for a quarter on the “for sale” bookcase at one of our local libraries. You can find it also at amazon.

The girls.

First things first. This is the dress that Grandma Donna and Allison made. The fabric is a knit, with small pink and turquoise hearts. Great colors for Allison. To keep the experience a positive one, they used velcro (which is hidden) for closures (much quicker then buttons). I don’t know my knits well, but this particular knit is very soft to the touch.   allison_dress_sewing.jpg   Over the weekend, the girls were really hoping for an opportunity to eat chinese. It didn’t happen, so quick thinking Hannah decided to create the “Girls Only Cafe”. (Luke was with Grandma, so we didn’t leave him out.) She said up a table with a cloth table covering, cloth napkins. Made a sign to hang. Allison took orders. Her plan worked and everyone enjoyed lunch. girls_only_cafe.jpg    The order is in ‘cursive’, they all ordered Mom’s homemade whole wheat cheese pizza. {grin}menu_orders.jpg

Saturday’s adventures.

Saturday was a beautiful day. Hannah and Allison went to Grandma’s to work on some sewing. (Photo to come soon.) Since we were short two kids, we asked Jeremiah to spend the day with us. Luke needed someone to play Lego Star Wars with. ;)We made a hike to the top of our hill to do a bit of extra exploring. Lizzie took her Easter basket to collect Easter eggs (dried leaves) and she even found a snail’s shell to add to her collection.luke_jeremiah_silly.jpg  liz_rock.jpg
Liz hiked to the top of the hill and down without being carried once! There were places when I would take her hand to make sure she didn’t slide down. Several times after taking her hand, she said, “It’s okay Mom, I’ll keep you safe.”

Nature walks, “needling” and the library

are a few of my favorite activities to make me smile. Today included all of the above. The temperature made it into the 30’s today – good enough for a walk up the hill. It wasn’t quite warm enough to read through many of our new library books, or any knitting, but hopefully tomorrow.  nature_sit_1_25.jpg   P.S. “Needling” is Allison and Lizzie’s definition of knitting or crochet.

Some recent knitting.

My first project completed with the yarn from Sarah. (The Plucky Knitter) plucky_knitter_sweater_fram.jpg

I’ve just completed the Allison’s first fingerless mitten with it. I am hoping to have enough to make myself another pair when I finish hers.

Square roots, alphabetical order and wheat grinding.

Friday, in between math and language arts, I was grinding wheat (Thank you Aubin.) I have had my order of organic wheat in the stairway since the end of November, it is super to have fresh flour again.  flour_grinding_bowl.jpg

Luke’s birthday.

Luke’s first birthday party involved friends and cupcakes. (The idea for the robots on the table covering was straight from WeeWonderfuls. Friday, Luke had more friends over, and Saturday, the family arrived. Three days of robot-filled fun.      luke_bday_boys.jpg robots_430.jpg  luke_eatting_cupcake_400.jpg  luke_robot_cake_200.jpg

Celebrating Luke.

Today, Luke turns seven. Seven!!! I spent a few moments digging through old photos and layouts to see how much he has grown. It is amazing how fast time goes.

We love you Luke. Happy Birthday!

Nature walk today.

We packed a blanket, notebooks, field guides, found the perfect spot under the shade of a few trees (just in case the sun came out), and then the rain started. And twelve hours later it is still raining… We did have fun while it lasted. The kids were all in agreement, we can’t wait for the rain to stop so we can try again.

The before and after…

Shortly after Christmas I stumbled upon a free skein of hand-dyed yarn. The only catch was that is was all tangled up.
See below photo.
plucky_yarn_mess.jpg

The day the yarn arrived, I began to work on it between other obligations, when I needed to head to class, Matheau arrived home, saw me working on the yarn, and took my spot. (Great husband, I know!) When I returned home two hours later. This is what I found.

The yarn is just as beautiful and soft in real life. Thanks for the yarn Sarah.
